Sarcopenia and fragility in older adults hospitalized in internal medicine wards
Abstract
Introduction: Sarcopenia and frailty are clinical syndromes of mutual risk and are indicators of adverse outcomes. There are currently no data in Latin american on the prevalence of these in hospitalized patients.
Objective: To determine the prevalence and clinical characteristics of patients aged 65 years and older with Sarcopenia in internal medicine wards.
Materials and methods: Observational, descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional study. Men and women 65 years of age or older. Were evaluated according to the EWGSOP and PRISMA 7 criteria.
Results: Of 124 patients, 41.13% had sarcopenia, 34.68% frailty and 18.55% had the 2 conditions The median age was 74 years, 50.8% female and 49.2% male.
Conclusion: Sarcopenia and fragility have a high prevalence in our population, higher than those reported in the available literature. Further studies may determine the impact of these conditions on clinical outcomes and costs.
